Steel and Sustainability: The Future of Architecture Begins Here

Contemporary architecture faces crucial challenges: reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency and promoting material circularity. In this context, steel stands out as a leading player. Not only for its mechanical strength, but also for its infinite recyclability, making it a strategic ally for future-oriented construction.

Why Steel is Sustainable

  • 100% Recyclability

Steel is the most recycled material in the world, with a recovery rate above 85% (World Steel Association). Each tonne of recycled steel saves around 1.5 tonnes of CO₂ compared to primary production.

In modern production cycles:

  • Electric Arc Furnace (EAF): up to 100% steel scrap.
  • Blast Furnace (BF): up to 30% scrap.
  • Emission Reduction

According to the IPCC and the European Green Deal, decarbonising steel is a priority to achieve emission reduction targets by 2050. Steel produced using renewable energy and innovative processes drastically reduces its carbon footprint. In this context, Italy plays a key role as the second steel producer in Europe (21.1 Mt in 2023, 11th worldwide). Although steel manufacturing accounts for approximately 19% of all manufacturing emissions, the sector has already reduced its emission intensity by 60.4% from 1990 to 2020, thanks to technological innovation and increased use of recycled materials. • Lightweight and Logistics

Being lighter than other materials, steel reduces emissions related to transport and handling on site.

XCarb®: The Plus for Those Seeking Maximum Sustainability

ItalPannelli offers the possibility of manufacturing its panels using XCarb® steel, a low-emission solution developed by ArcelorMittal. On customer request, this premium option can be integrated to further reduce the environmental impact of the project.

  • Produced with renewable energy and low-impact processes.
  • Up to 100% recycled content.
  • Reduction of the carbon footprint by up to -70% compared to traditional solutions (ArcelorMittal Sustainability Report).

This choice enables alignment with the decarbonisation goals of the construction supply chain and the most rigorous environmental certifications.

Sandwich Panels and Sustainability in Construction

  • Energy Efficiency: Thanks to their high insulating capacity, sandwich panels reduce heat loss and improve indoor comfort, contributing to lower energy consumption.
  • Environmental Certifications: The use of sandwich panels with recycled materials and high thermal performance helps achieve credits for LEED, BREEAM and other green certifications. In addition, when using XCarb® (Recycled and Renewably Produced steel), the embodied carbon footprint can be reduced by 43–69% compared to conventional steel panels, further strengthening compliance with sustainability standards and green building requirements (ArcelorMittal Building Solutions).
  • Reduced Site Time and Costs: Prefabrication reduces waste and optimises logistics, with a positive impact on the overall carbon footprint.
  • Disassembly: Designed to be dismantled and recycled at the end of their life, in line with the principles of the circular economy.

The Contribution of ItalPannelli

  • Renewable Energy: 6.7 MW photovoltaic plant, with 1.7 GWh/year of energy generated and 632 tonnes of CO₂ avoided every year.
  • Recycled Materials: In addition to over 90% of mineral wool waste reused, ItalPannelli guarantees minimum recycled content for steel:
    • Non-alloy Electric Arc Furnace steel: minimum 70% recycled content
    • Alloy Electric Arc Furnace steel: minimum 60% recycled content
    • Integrated cycle steel: minimum 12% recycled content
  • XCarb® Option: Recycled and renewably produced steel with elevated recycled content (up to 75%), produced in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) using renewable energy.
  • Strategic Partnership: ItalPannelli is a member of Fondazione Promozione Acciaio, confirming its commitment to spreading the culture of steel and sustainable construction in Italy.

Steel is not just a material—it’s a commitment to a sustainable future. ItalPannelli combines advanced technology, renewable energy, and circular design to help architects and builders meet the highest environmental standards. And for those aiming for maximum impact, the XCarb® Recycled and Renewably Produced (RRP) option offers a clear path to drastically lower emissions and achieve top green certifications.

Together, we can shape architecture that is not only strong and efficient, but truly responsible.
